When I was 16 years old, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn’t the first time I had been ABOARD (出国). Like most of English children I learned French at school. And I had often BEEN (到过) to France, so I was used TO SPEAKING (习惯说) a foreign language to people who didn’t understand ENGLISH (英语). But when I went to America I was really looking forward to HAVING (享受) a nice easy holiday without any LANGUAGE (语言沟通) problems.
How wrong I was! The misunderstanding began at the airport. I was looking for a PUBLIC (公共电话) telephone to give my friend Danny a RING (打个电话) and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me LOOKING (貌似) lost and asked IF (是否) he could help me.
“Yes”, I said. “I want to give my friend a ring.”
“Well, that’s NICE(很好),” he said. “Are you getting MARRIED(结婚)? But aren’t you a bit YOUNG(太年轻)?”
“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I JUST(只) want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”
“Oh!” he said, “there’s a phone downstairs.”
When at last we DID(终于) meet up, Danny EXPLAINED (解释)the misunderstandings to me.
“Don’t worry,” she said to me, “I had so many DIFFICULTIES (困难)at first. There are lots of words which the Americans USE differently in meaning from US BRITISH(我们英国人). You'll soon get used to ALL THE(全部) things they say. Most of the time British and American people understand each other!”
