:The Big Mix
Todd: So CleAnn, you're from Trinidad and Tobago and you were saying that your country has a verydiverse multicultural mix?
CleAnn: Yes.
Todd: Can you talk about that?
CleAnn: Oh sure. Trinidad and Tobago mostly were made up of people from Africa African descent who came as slaves and Indians who came from India...mostly, I think we may also have some from parts of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, but they came as indentured laborers closer to when slavery was being abolished. These two groups actually make up the two largest ethnic groups in Trinidad. However, there is a lot of mixing. It's very difficult to find someone in Trinidad and Tobago who is extremely, purely of one ethnic group because everyone is sort of mixed. We have also a lot of whites or caucasians who are native to Trinidad and Tobago who speak exactly like me with my Caribbean accent and many people who find it very strange because they will walk around in Trinidad and think that they are tourists but realize that they are actually native Trinidadians. And many also e from Europe to settle in Trinidad after retirement and have their families here so this is how they came to stay here. We have a very large Chinese population and its growing because now the government is encouraging immigrants from China to e in to help us with our development, to build our capital city so we have a lot of Chinese. We have a lot of Colombians, Venezuelans, people ing from South and Central America migrating to Trinidad because Spanish is now being promoted as a second language for Trinidad so street signs in our capital city are in English and Spanish. So with all of this mixing of different people it's very, as I said, very difficult to find a person who is of just one ethnic group and it's reflected in our food, it's reflected in the kind of music we listen to, sometimes in the way we dress. For me, for example, I'm mostly of African descent but my dad is mixed with people from South American ethnicity and Chinese. So, as I said, although I'm mostly African, everybody still has a little bit of something in them.
:Long Distance Relationships
Alex: So how do you feel about long distance relationships?
Maria: Not that good. I had two relationships by now and both of them ended after me going somewhere. First time I was in Denmark but like I lived on a school in another city and while I was there for four months like I think two months after I went home to him and broke up and then came back to the school and just didn't really care. And then the second time I went traveling and I missed him so much and I came back and realized that there was nothing left. I'd lost everything while I was away so I don't, after one month, after two months, I think it just doesn't work for me if it's not really special.
Alex: Yeah, I guess you're kind of like me. I have to see the person.
Maria: Exactly.
Alex: Almost, you know, daily.
Maria: Exactly and you can have conversations online and on the phone but if there's no, I don't know, it doesn't have to be much, just like be close, see each other in the eye.
Alex: It's a big difference, yeah. I did a month when I went home to Australia away...
Maria: This summer?
Alex: Yeah, this recent summer and like Skype is just not enough. Do you know what I mean? You can see the person, you can talk to them, you know you can kiss the camera if you want but it's not...
Maria: If you want.
Alex: You know it's not the same but that's not to say I don't think, some people can do it.
Maria: I figure if it's a very, like if the relationship is very, it's very passionate',event">passionate or you've been going on for a long time because both of my relationships were under one year I think. The first one was one year and the second one was half a year. So if we're used to staying together then I think you can work it out. I'm just too impatient.
Alex: Yeah, I guess under a year you haven't really learned to depend on the other person all the time.
Maria: Exactly.
Alex: Or...
Maria: Still going by the passion and if you can't see the person every day or like whenever you want, then the passion just slowly fades.
Alex: Yeah, agreed.
Maria: But this is your first relationship right?
Alex: Yes it is and I did one month when I went home away from the person and it was just...
Maria: And that was the first time you ever went away from the person?
Alex: Yeah and it was just aah horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible.
Maria: I remember the first time I like traveled while my boyfriend was still at home and it was a week and I was devastated so it's, if it's passionate',event">passionate it's...
Alex: Well I did Christmas away from them when I went to Christmas, I did India for Christmas last year.
Maria: OK.
Alex: And two weeks was bad enough and then a month and I was just pulling my hair out, do you know? So.
Maria: Yeah, it's hard.
Alex: It, yeah, it certainly is.
Maria: Yeah.
:Food for Good Skin
Mike: Hey, MJ, I heard that herbal tea is good for your plexion?
MJ: Yes, I think so, cause recently I'm drinking lots of herbal tea, and then face getting more white and *** ooth I think. It really helps on your plexion. Mike, you should try sometime.
Mike: Actually, for me it's the opposite. My skin's pretty dry right now, especially since summer is ing, and so I've been using some kind of moisturizer but it doesn't really work that well so maybe I should take up the ... I should start drinking herbal tea.
MJ: Yeah, you should cause, a long time ago my face was kind of dry like you, but after drinking herbal tea, which my roommate remended to me, and you really help your skin to be more bright and energetic. My skin no more dry. It's really good.
Mike: Other than tea, what about food?
MJ: I think garlic is really good for your plexion.
Mike: Oh, I heard about that as well.
MJ: Yeah, most Korean girls, they have such good skin, especially on their face, I think because they're eating kimchi which the main ingredient is garlic.
Mike: Right, that's a big problem for me because I don't like garlic. I don't mind it if it's fried with vegetables, but I don't like the raw taste of garlic. Garlic's out for me, so are there any other stuff I can try?
MJ: You know tomato? It is low calorie and it is a vegetable which tastes like fruit but is a vegetable that is really good for your plexion as well so if you like tomato, just try to take as many tomato as you can.
Mike: Fresh tomato?
MJ: Fresh tomato.
Mike: What about like tomato based stuff like pasta? Is that OK or is that no?
MJ: That is OK but when you cook the tomato, there are vitamins just goes away, so the fresh one is better.
Mike: Fresh stuff. OK. OK, I got that.
MJ: By the way, what about Singapore? Like do girls eat special food for their skin?
Mike: Good question. I don't know that much, but there's always this thing about eating tofu and for my dad, he doesn't even cook it. He eats it like ... he just eats tofu without cooking it. And my dad has great plexion. My mom, she drinks a bination of Bali Green. It's just a green substancefrom the bali plant, and she basically blends them together with garlic and one other fruit, and a little bit of honey and apple cider, so it's just a few ingredients together and then she mixes it with juice and she drinks it like every morning, but I've tried it but I don't like raw garlic so I couldn't stomach that, but my mom's plexion is good, but these are not only good for your plexion, this is just good for overall health.
