How To Be Popular
By Justin Becker
We all wished we were popular back in high school, when the most popular guys were the ones with the coolest jeans, cars or motorcycles. They never did their own homework, were on the football team, and always got the girls who were crowned homecoming queen.
By the time we're professionals, the popular guys are the ones who are ambitious, intelligent and confident. They have a circle of friends they're proud of, and have good reputations.
who's the man?
The definition of popularity may have changed, but the characteristics of a popular man remain the same.
Popular men are charismatic, socially accepted (even if someone doesn't like them, they don't dwell on it), and have a magnetic appeal that draws others to them.
If you were to describe the most popular man you know, you would say that "women want to be with him, and men want to be him."
Want that description for yourself? You'll just have to develop certain traits and attitudes.
... you'll be the man
Be comfortable
You don't need to be the most confident guy at the office or in your building, but you do need to be comfortable with who you are, how you look, and whatever actions you decide on. When you're comfortable in your own skin, you'll know how to react in given situations, and you'll interact with others easily.
Be proactive
The popular person doesn't sit by the sidelines to watch the parade go by -- and even if he does, it's because he knows when to jump in at appropriate moments. So if you start a new job or relocated to a new city, it's up to you to introduce yourself to others and break the ice.
If you're the popular guy, you won't let yourself become the nameless face behind the cubicle wall. Don't be the guy with a nickname for everyone either; does "Rob. Roberinoo. Making copies" sound familiar?
Be a good conversationalist
If you're comfortable with yourself, you'll surely know how to start conversations with strangers and acquaintances. You'll need to have personable skills, including making small talk with people you meet, even for the first time.
You know those guys who squirm whenever there's an uncomfortable silence? Someone who's comfortable with himself will know how to make the best of those silent moments, whether to reflect for a few seconds, or crack a witty joke.
Be funny
Having a good sense of humor and the ability to be genuinely funny can be innate, but it can also be an acquired skill. Remember, you want people to laugh with you, not at you.
But you too can learn to be funny. Just stay up-to-date with pop culture, watch sitcoms or comedians regularly, and learn how to master the art of being tactful.
Learn proper timing
You're not applying to be a stand-up comedian, but timing is an important part of being a well-liked guy. A popular guy knows when it's time to talk or shut up, act or sit still.
Stay positive and smile
A picture may say a thousand words, but a smile says a million. Part of having a lot of friends and a magnetic appeal that both men and women sense, includes being an optimistic person.
Most of the social problems that people have stem from not being satisfied and proud of who they are. There's no need to be arrogant, but if you radiate pride and confidence, it'll be obvious that you have something to offer others.
And yes, it's important to be mysterious in the dating game, but being intriguing is not the same as being a misery (too serious, that is).
Look good and well-groomed
So you look good on the inside, but that's not enough. You need to look great on the outside too, and always be properly groomed. This entails wearing your hair in a flattering style, projecting a fashionable image, smelling good, and not being afraid to try out a new trend. While it's important to be fashionable, the key is following your own style, and wearing what you think suits you best.
Have an opinion
Part of being popular is being a leader rather than a follower; having your own opinion and sticking to your beliefs -- and having the confidence to do so.
Stay cool
Some are born cool; some will never be cool. The frustrating part about coolness is that you can't define it, but you can recognize it from miles away. You know the man who seems unphrased by everything, yet is sensitive enough to care? Well, he exudes that coolness most men strive for.
Never try too hard
That coolness is hard to achieve, but once you try too hard, you lose the ability to be cool. Popular people don't try to be cool; whatever they do just oozes coolness, whether they're standing by the bar chugging a beer alone, or surrounded by a group on the dance floor. It has more to do with their demeanor and attitude.
be you, with a twist
In order to achieve popularity, you'll need to work on yourself; first and foremost you must locate your self-confidence, improve it if it's low or non-existent, and then work on your social skills.
Soon you'll have to learn how to balance your social life with your family and job. But stay calm, cool and collected, it'll all fall into place.
