while和when的区别，我主要是不知道什么时候用一般过去时，什么时候用过去进行时

我举个例子吧。
1、I was telephoning a fridend when Bob came in.
为什么前面部分（I was telephoning a fridend ）用了过去进行时，而后面部分（when Bob came in）就用了一般过去时呢？
2、She didn't want to stay in bed while the others were working in the fields.
为什么前面部分用了过去进行时，而后面部分就用了一般过去时？

我就是在这方面不懂，不知道要用什么时态，是不是要结合中文意思来分析？麻烦解答一下，我明天要考试了。谢谢。

1、在 I was telephoning a fridend when Bob came in. 这个句子中 when 相当于一个并列连词——
