“轮船”一词始于我国唐代。唐代李皋发明了 “桨轮船”（车轮船），它的两舷装着会转动的桨轮。桨轮外周装上叶片，它的下半部分浸在水中，上半部分露出水面。由人力踩动车轮，叶片拨水，推进船舶。因这种桨轮露出水面，所以称为 “明轮船”或 “轮船”，以便和人工划桨的木船、风力推动的帆船相区别。
船用发动机和推进器的进步，解决了船舶技术动力问题，也使建造船舶的材料由木材向钢铁演变。早期的轮船以蒸汽机为动力，煤炭在锅炉里喷着火，烟囱冒着浓浓的黑烟，因南昌曾被称之为 “火轮”
