Abstract: Safety of edible oil has, with continuous reports of cases such as import of oil or
oil-plants in large sums as for China during the past decade, occupation of the majority of market by edible oil refined from genetically modified crops(GMC), application of hogwash-extracted oil to be cooking oil, animal carcass oil serving as seasoning oil, etc., become one of the primary issues to trouble the whole food industry rightnow. It seems to attribute to excessive import of oil, high import dependence, large market share by foreign-owned enterprises besides venality & profit-pursuing by unscrupulous enterprises/merchants, deficiency of moral and legal standards for safety of edible oil. Yet this issue is, with further comprehensive review, related to lack of powerful safeguard-mechanism, imperfect foods satety system, detection methods for edible oil as well as malpractice by relevant functional departments. This article proceeded with several ways as quantity safety guarantee for edible oil, related detection methods, construction for traceable system of industrial management, suggestions for construction of relevant guarantee surveillance system, further fulfillment of related regulations, etc. to discuss effective approaches and methods to guarantee safety of edible oil in China

Abstract: In view of the dominating market share created by large import of oil, oilseeds and
edible oil products from genetically modified crops into China during the past decade, as well
as the continuous reports of incidents regarding the use of drainage oil as edible oil, and dead
animal fat as seasoning oil and blending oil, edible oil safety has become a grave problem
confronting the food service industry. Superficially, the causes seem to be the excessive
quantity and high degree of dependence on edible oil imports, large market share controlled by
foreign companies, and the illegal enterprises and traders who are reckless with greed,
immoral and oblivious to law; but from the conscientiously overall reflection, this problem has
to do with the lack of strong security mechanism for edible oil, the imperfect food safety
system and the inability of performing their duties by the relevant authorities. This paper
explores the effective methods and approaches to ensure the edible oil safety in China by
emphatically reviewing the various perspectives in terms of the safeguard on quantity and
safety of edible oil, the relevant means of testing edible oil, the traceability system, the
suggestions on the construction of industry control and the relevant safeguard and supervision
system, as well as the further improvement on the relevant laws and regulations.
