In both English and French language, there are words end with sound syllable of vowel endings and also silent syllable of consonant endings. But in Chinese language, apart from a few that with nasal consonant endings, the majority are all ending with the vowel sounds.

开音节词 = sound syllable
闭音节词 = silent syllable
例: The word "comb" in English, the letter "b" is silent. 在英文comb这个字，"b"是闭音的。
The word "Paris" in French, the letter "s" is silent. 在法语"Paris"这个字，後面的"s"是闭音的。所以中文翻译为"巴黎"而不是"巴黎斯"就是这个原因了。
