英语有6种时态：

the present tense - I write / I am writing a letter.
the perfect tense - I have written a letter.
the simple past tense - I wrote a letter. / the imperfect - I was writing a letter.
the pluperfect (the past perfect) - I had written a letter. / I had been writing a letter.
teh future - I will write a letter. / I will be writing a letter.
the future perfect - I will have written a letter. / I will have been writing a letter.

总的来说分三种：现在时（the present），过去时（the past），和将来时（the future）。
现在时分为 the present - I write a letter. 和 the present continuous - I am writing a letter.
过去时分为 the simple past - I wrote a letter （动词采用这种形式 - preterite). 和 the past continuous （也叫做the imperfect) - I was writing the letter.
将来时分为 the future - I will write a letter. 和 the future continuous - I will be writing a letter.
将来时可以是 near future (短暂将来)- I am going to write a letter. / I am going to be writing a letter. 或遥远将来时 - I will write a letter. / I will be writing a letter.

每一个时态都有自己的“进行时” (continuous / progressive)。例如，the past continuous, 就叫做 the imperfect. 其它的在名字後面加上 continuous 或 progressive, 例如 the future continuous - I will be writing a letter. 所以细分，英语有十二种时态。
