Hello, my name is Danny. I find it difficult to tell the difference between
the sound u and the sound ar.Obviously, one is a short
vowel, and the other is a long vowel. But when it comes to listening and
speaking, the difference is not that obvious to me. So, is there any other way
to distinguish these two sounds? I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Thank
you.
I think there are two main differences between u and ar. First of all ar is longer which is obvious. And secondly, when you are pronouncing ar the
shape of your lips is larger than u.
First of all, let's talk about the different pronunciations and then we can
practise.
Ok Wang Fei, let's do a practice. Here are some words with similar
pronunciation: hut and heart.
Cut and cart
Starter and stutter
Lust and last
I hope you can hear the difference between u and ar.
Another point I want to say is that in American English, people might pronounce
heart as hart, and last as last. In Scottish English people also tend to
read starter as starter. So what we talked about before is the standard
pronunciation in English English.
Vowels vary more than consonants in different English accents around the world.
What we are talking about is the Received Pronunciation in Britain. English is an international language. You might
hear different accents in the world, but you can't say they are wrong.
But from the bottom of my heart, I love British English.
希望我能帮助你解疑释惑。
