Computers and books were among the least expensive items with only 1% and 6% of expenditure respectively. By 1986, expenditure on food had decreased to 14%, while that on restaurants increased to 7%. Moreover, people started buying computers more frequently, as the percentage of expenditure on it rose significantly to 10%. Twenty years later, in 1996, cars had become the most expensive item, accounting for 45% of expenditure, while furniture became less popular with only 8% of expenditure. Additionally, restaurant spending had almost doubled from the 1966 figures, reaching 14%, petrol remained steady and spending on computers also increased significantly to 10%.
