At age 19, Itraveled with my family to San Francisco, and as the song goes, I lost myheart. I planned to complete nurses’ training and move to my favorite city.

During a job interview, a nursingsupervisor declared that she could not offer me a position because I couldn’treach the medications on the upper shelves. My response was that I’d asksomeone to reach it for me. Short people face such challenges every day, butthe wheelchair somehow blocked the supervisor’s ability to believe I couldsolve my own simple problems, That was the first of many such moments. As aparaplegic, my imagination must work time-and-a-half in an environment filledwith barriers and obstacles. This ability enabled me to create the comfort zonethat is now my home. A growing interest in furnishings and interior design alsofueled my fire to make a space that would be truly mine.
