for an overview see Baxter, in press) that these two interdependent problems can productively be turned on end: the vexing problem is an orientation toward unity and the intellectual problem is how to embrace difference. Stated in Bakhtin’s terms, it is monologue that is troublesome and we should be seeking ways to sustain
dialogue. The sovereign individual is de-centered in a dialogic perspective, resulting instead in a focus on the discourse between interlocutors.
