What should you do if there is a fire at school?Do you know how to protect yourself in a large crowd? Every year since 1996,on the last Monday of the last week in March,the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students(全国中小学安全教育日)is held.This year it falls on March 30.It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.
A 2010 survey from People’s Daily shows that the worst accidents were a result of stampedes,fore and traffic.
Experts suggest that right safety measures could avoid 80 percent of these accidents,China Education Daily reported.
When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm.But different accidents mean different ways of dealing with them.
A stampede happens in a place where a large crowed is gathered.When students around you begin to push,stand still and try to hold onto something,or stay in a corner until the crowed leaves.If you fall down in a moving crowd,cover your head with both hands.Lean to one side,curl your body and bend your legs.
When there’s fire,stay calm and follow teacher’s instructions.Leave the classroom and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.
If you take a school bus on your way home,remember to fasten your seatbelt and don’t walk around when the bus is moving.If you walk to school or go by bike,follow traffic rules.Wait for the green traffic light,and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.

SMOG is a big problem in many Chinese cities. But it seems that besides wearing a mask(口罩), few of us know what has caused the smog and what to do to beat it. Chai Jing, a former news anchor with China Central Television, discussed the questions in her documentary Under the Dome.《穹顶之下》
The 103-minute film was released on major Chinese video-sharing websites on Feb 28.In the film, Chai visits polluted places and talks to officials and scientists. She concludes that burning too much coal and oil are the main causes of PM2. 5 and smog.
To make things worse, according to Chai, the coal and oil we are burning is of poor quality and don't meet the standards for environmental protection. Therefore they have protected more
harmful gas and particles(颗粒) to pollute the air.
To solve the problem, Chai suggests that we should clean our coal and oil or replace them with cleaner energy such as natural gas.
In her film, Chai also emphasized (强调) that ordinary people can do something to help control smog too. For example, we can live a greener life by using more public transportation.Or if we see things that could harm the environment, we can try to stop it. In one scene from the film, Chai sees a dirt mound in a building site exposed in the air, and asks the person in charge to cover it. When she sees a restaurant cooking without any suitable filter facilities(过滤设备), she calls the hotline 12369. The restaurant installed the filter a week later.
Chen Jining, the new minister of environmental protection, praised Chai. "This film encourages ordinary people to be concerned with the environment. This is what we need in the future.”
