instruct是动词，意思有指示，吩咐；教授，指导；聘请（律师）,托办；通知；(法官向陪审团）建议，作说明。

instruct是个及物动词，不同意思用法各不相同。
1、指导，教授，其固定搭配如下：
instruct sb. in （doing）sth.指导某人（做）某事
例如：The cook is instructing my mather in cooking.
这位厨师正在指导我妈妈做饭。

2、指示，命令，其固定搭配如下：
①instruct sb. to do sth.命令/吩咐某人做某事
例如：He instructed us to participate in this discussion at once.
他命令我们立刻参与此次讨论。
②as instructed 按照指示
例如：The students gave performances on the stage as instructed.
学生们按照指示在舞台上表演。

3、告知，其句型为：
instruct sb that……（真实语气）
告知某人……
例如：They were instructed that their school had strengthened its ties with a university.
他们被告知他们学校已经加强与一所大学的联系。
