Most people like to make a good impression(给…留下好印象) on other people. This is true when they look for a job, when they go to a meeting, or when they go out with their friends. Dressing well is one of the ways of making a good impression.
Different countries have different ideas of dressing well. In the United States, people think that dressing well means dressing simply and suitably(适合地,适宜地). For example, ball(舞会) dresses are not suitable for school or for work. They do not wear light clothes in the winter, or heavy clothes in the summer, nor would it be comfortable.
Dressing with too many colors or ornaments(装饰品) is not a good taste. Too much of anything is extreme. Simple clothes are easy to find and they can be bought cheaply, too. They are always in style and always in good taste.
Simple suitable clothes are worth having for children, too. A little girl does not feel comfortable when she is wearing a party dress and all the other girls in school are wearing plain(简单的) sweaters and skirts. A little boy is not happy when he is the only occasion in his class without a tie(领结). Feeling “different” is never comfortable for a child. There is an old saying which reads, “Do in Rome as Romans(罗马人)do.” When you live in the United States, you will be happy if you learn to dress simply and suitably.
