为什么下面这句话中可以连用介词（on to）呢？为什么不替换为“onto”呢？

They were climbing up the wall of the house and then on to the leaves of the tree.（们正在顺着房子的外墙往上爬，然后爬上树叶。）——《新概念英语》

他们的动作是连贯且带有目的指向的 所以是 on to （动词其实接的都是climb）。 onto是表现的事物当前的状态。

谢谢。补充说明：onto 与 on to 都用作介词，合写一词的 onto 在意上相当于 to＋on，即表示某物向另一物运动(to)，然后停落在另一物之上(on)。在使用时两者常可换用。
以下情况的 on to 不能合写为一词(onto)：(1) on 为副词时；(2) on 后的 to 为不定式符号时。
