There was some news online a little while ago about Levis Japan closing down some factories in Japan.When I first started going over to Japan in the late 80's some clever buyers had just bought the original looms fromLevis and so many of my friends wanted these vintage Levis Japanese denims that I was shipping pairs back here.Before the internet / ebay the only place to find vintage 501 0r 505 was in the vintage stores. I would try to pick up505s at that time because the 501 prices were too hyped. The 505 shape was more tapered on the leg and it hadthe big back pockets. They still were not so easy to find in the UK so it was a dreamto be taken by HF to Ueno and denim heaven. I remember buying a pair that came in a box that were so nice. I hand carried the boxon the airplane and everyone was shocked by the presentation - I didnt bother explaining the price or why they cost so much comparedto what the regular pants cost - nobody could understand this except for the maniacs. HF had a type two jacket that was tastefullyfrayed on the first shooting we did back then for one of his magazines - its not surprising that there was a boom on the way for vintage denim andmilitary that lasted until ebay became the best place to buy. The dollar was weak and so I could buy used denim in all kinds of condition -sometimes minter, sometimes marked, soiled and thrashed.Now from what I heard from Levis - most of their denim is woven at Cone Mills in Carolina - almost 95% - so the closing of these factories will not affectthe production of their XX's. Are the kids in Japan over vintage ? Will this have a knock on effect on prices and availability. I surely hope sobecause in my opinion you still cant beat those products that were made to improve with wear and built to last.

We are now starting work to reopen FOOT PATROL. Its gong to start up at the end of this year or early next year. We got a new site in Berwick Streetin Soho London and are about to start the process. When we made this store - about five years ago there werent any 'sneaker boutiques. Now mostare struggling or closed so it seems like a good time to get back on it. Obviously we cant go at it in the same way. The market is different now than it was five years ago.My team is scattered too - Fraser Cooke is at Nike, Wesley at Adidas....but there is tons of product out there - way too much to know what is essentialand so I think that the FP filter is just as necessary. The service that we provided was 'endorsement' and our customers appreciated that service.We had so many cool events that went hand in hand with the releases too
I cant believe that its 15 years since NHBD started. It was very nice to be asked by Mr. Takizawa to make graphics for this anniversary.I first met him at File records in 1990 when HF took me. Mr Takizawa was doing their merchandising amongst other things and I believe he made that Major Force logo.Some of my friends - DJ MILO and Nellee from the Wild Bunch - had worked on remix projects with HF and had given me the records and at the time I loved them.I also loved the packaging which was a bit like Def Jam. I always followed Mr Takizawa's work after that - its no surprise to me how popularNHBD became.
