Text 1

W: How far do you live from the school, John?

M: It takes about 15 minutes by bus. But during rush hour, it will take twice that time.

Text 2

M: You have been in this country for two months. Can you follow the professors’ lectures?

W: Well, it depends. I can for English, math, geography and art. But as for Chinese, it is beyond me.

Text 3

W: Sir, these are the jeans that you want. They’re only $80.

M: What? That’s daylight robbery!

W: No, sir. That’s actually very cheap for a pair of Levi’s.

Text 4

M: You look a bit tired. What have you been doing?

W: Shopping for some new furniture.

M: Did you get what you wanted?

W: I did, but it took me all day. Now I just want to lie down and relax. My feet are killing me!

Text 5

M: Has the class party next Saturday been called off? Why?

W: Because Mr Chan was very angry that no one came for the planned meeting last Monday.

M: Lynne, you should go and see Mr Chan. You are, after all, the teacher’s pet.

W: Don’t worry. I’ll talk it over with him. I’m sure he’ll understand.

Text 6

M: Sorry. I’m late, Miss King.

W: Oh! Jason. You were late from Monday to Thursday this week, and today you are late again. What’s your excuse this time? Your mother was ill? You helped a granny cross the road? You got caught in a traffic jam? You stayed up last night, doing your homework?

M: I’m sorry, Miss King. But my alarm clock didn’t ring today. Maybe it needs repairing …

W: Oh, Jason, stop, please. I don’t want to listen to you now. It is not the clock but you that need repairing.

M: Sorry, Miss King.

W: Jason, remember, if you are late next time, don’t enter my class and keep out of sight. Don’t forget to come to my office when the class is over.

M: My God! No!

W: Do you have any problem, Jason?

M: Oh, no. I think it is a good idea, Miss King. I will do as I’m told.

Text 7

M: Hi, Jane, you are in good shape. Can you tell me some ways to keep healthy?

W: No problem. First of all, you should get enough sleep and drink plenty of water.

M: I couldn’t agree more. People need eight hours of sleep and eight cups of water a day so that the skin will be smooth.

W: Mm, taking exercise is also a good way to keep fit.

M: I hate walking around and running. Will swimming be helpful?

W: Of course. And keep in mind that a healthy diet is necessary. Do you know what a healthy diet is?

M: You mean we should eat healthy food including rice, fruit, vegetables, fish …?

W: Yes. And you should try your best to avoid cigarettes, wine, junk food and so on.

M: Well, I think it is too difficult for me when it comes to wine.

W: OK, let’s enjoy my diet. Hi, waiter! A glass of orange juice, a peach, please. And I’ll have two boiled eggs, with cheese and mushrooms. Thank you.

M: My God! It is so long a list. I can imagine the difficulty you have keeping healthy. Tomorrow I’ll …

W: Come on, Peter. If you take my advice, you will be better. Take action right now and stop eating junk food.

Text 8

M: Well, thank you very much for this interview.

W: It’s my pleasure.

M: Well, there are lots of questions I’d like to ask you, but first of all, could you tell me something about your early life?

W: I was born in Hungary. And I lived there for all of my childhood.

M: I believe that was a strange story about your birth.

W: Yes. We lived by a lake. My mother was on a boat going to the hospital across the lake, but it was too late.

M: And you came into the world?

W: Yes, on a beautiful day. In fact, it was April 21 when I was born.

M: Would you please say something about your parents?

W: Sure. My father was a history professor in a university. And my mother was a pianist.

M: Maybe that is the reason why you like music so much.

W: Yes. I danced when my mum played the piano, which was wonderful.

M: May I know something about your, your …?

W: You mean marriage? I got married when I was very young. I had an American husband. And he died very young. Then I married another man who came from Canada. And my third husband was French.

Text 9

M: Hello! Holmes Police Station?

W: Yes. Can I help you?

M: Well, I found some strange objects flying over my house.

W: Hold on, please … Now, can you tell me when it took place?

M: Well. It was last night at 9:30.

W: How long did you see the objects?

M: For about 5 minutes, if not longer. And I think they were more than one. They were 5. They were golden in color and kept flying up and down.

W: Did they make any noise?

M: Yes, very loud.

W: OK, sir. Could you please give me your name and address?

M: My name is Geoffrey Croft. G-E-O-F-F-R-E-Y, C-R-O-F-T.

W: And your address and telephone number, sir?

M: It’s No. 14 Smith Street, Manchester. And my number is 6347011.

W: Oh, I forgot one point. Could you please tell me in what direction they were flying?

M: They were flying from east to west.

W: All right, sir. We’ll tell you if there are any more developments. Thank you for your information.

It is not easy to stop smoking forever. However, doctors say you probably will live longer if you do stop smoking. You will feel better and look better. The American Cancer Society says the sooner smokers stop smoking, the more they can reduce their chances of cancer and other diseases. It says blood pressure returns to normal twenty minutes after smoking the last cigarette. After one day, the chance of heart attack decreases. After one year, the risk of heart disease for a non-smoker is half that of a smoker.

The American Cancer Society says there is no best way to stop smoking. Any legal and effective way is worth trying. To stop smoking, you should carefully plan your action for at least one week. Try to stay away from people and situations that might trouble you. Do not go to public places where people smoke. Drinking alcohol can also make it harder to stop smoking. So if you drink, you may need to stop for a while. Also, when you want to smoke, you should chew gum or eat a piece of fruit or vegetable instead.

Dear Betty,

I arrived at Nantong on April 15, 2009. I have been here for two days and visited lots of places of interest here, such as the Langshan Scenic Area and the Hao River Scenic Area.

I think Nantong is really a beautiful city with a long history, which was first set up in 958 AD. The city’s called the “pearl on the Yellow Sea and the Yangtze River”. It covers an area of nearly 8,544 square kilometers and has a population of 7.85 million. It used to be a small city, but now it has developed into a modern big city and people here are leading a happy and rich life. I strongly recommend you to visit it when you come to China.

I’m looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Don

解析:

beyond one’s reach = out of one’s reach意为“力所不能及;够不着”。

28. A。 describe oneself as…

as is the case with意为“对……来说是常有的事”,as放在句首引导非限制性定语从句。

33. B。考查副词。perfectly意为“完美地”;properly意为“适当地”;largely意为“主要地”;

there seems to be…
