ThewholelanguagethingissomethingIhavetriedbefore,andyes,IamsureIwillbeabletodealwithi... The whole language thing is something I have tried before, and yes, I am sure I will be able to deal with it. You get a long way with a smile anyway:)

回答以下问题
Are there any politeness customs that we don't use in the West and that I should know about so that I don't offend anyone? How do people for example greet each other in China? And what should I bring as a present if I visit locals? Do I have to take off my shoes before entering the door?

Globalization is happening everywhere, and especially in China. Chinese society is rapidly moving to modern society, so basically everything you guys do, we also do in here. China is not that kind traditional as you think, so just don’t worry; be yourself, I think everything is going to be ok. People usually say “nihao”(or you can say Hi or Hello if you like) to greet each other when they first meet. Chinese people welcome guests; you don’t have to spend much thought on gifts. If you really like to bring some gifts to locals, you can just buy something as you normally buy when you visit your friends. In some houses, you need to take off your shoes, but most places I don’t think you need to do that.

As a Chinese, we do not kiss others when we meet, instead, we smile, shakehands, or just nod our heads. When first meet, you can shakehands and say"你好",when meet again, you can wave your hands and say hi, just as you do in America. We also use hi, hello, bye, bye-bye, and thank you in China.
When you visit locals here, you can take some fruits or local things you take from your country, and you need not to package them. Chinese people are hospitable, your visit will make them happy. When you enter their house, you can ask the host or hostess if you need to take off your shoes.
Have fun in China!

NO,you shouldn't be that serious.China is an acceptale nation, just be yourself. And smile is needed. No one will reject smiles,it shows your kindness.
About greeting,we just say Hello, smile when come across each other.
About present, just choose something meaningful for the reason you visit them.
About taking off shoes or not,it depends on the variaty of person.
