Exploring Mars by Remote Control
Back in the salad days of American space exploration, NASA scientists and engineers longed to send car-sized vehicles to Mars to explore the planet’s surface.
Trouble was, such ambitions missions would cost billions of unavailable dollars. Even so, in preparation for the outside possibility, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory built models one eighth the size of the proposed rovers --- or roughly 2 feet long. The little guys, nicknamed “Rocky” and assembled from inexpensive commercial and military-grade parts, soon became the real thing.
For the planned Mars Environmental Survey pathfinder missions, a micro-rover will arrive in 1997 aboard the lander(着陆仓). The solar-powered, six-wheeled,22-pound vehicle will see where it’s going with two tiny TV cameras and measure distance to objects with five laser range finders. It will be able to climb a 30-degree slope in dry sand. It will carry a spectrometer that can determine the chemical composition of surface rocks. Observing how far the wheels sink will show density of the soil; locking five wheels and spinning the sixth will measure how sticky it is.
The rover’s path will be directed by a technician on Earth. Since radio signals from Mars take six 41 minutes to reach Earth, depending on the position of the planets, the operator can’t actually“drive” the rover. Pictures from the rover and lander displayed on a computer screen will be used to determine where the rover is to head and a safe route to get there. The rover will move on its own (it has a limited ability to avoid unexpected obstacles) at 3 feet a minute. At a designated spot, it will take more pictures so the operator can select its next destination.
Initial trips will be within 30 feet or so from the lander, though the rover can maintain radio contact with the lander more than half a mile away. Toward the end of the mission, high-risk trips might be attempted. The rover could, for example, be told to scout beyond ridges and radio range, then report back.
