The music in a way kind of paralleled the kind of night it was, it wasn't a hot summer night it was in November, November 18th 1993, near the holidays. The mood was set, it was cold outside, there was a big crowd outside the studio, very early winter, but anyone who was there was very much enthralled by the overall experience. Nirvana were looking forward to showing off their softer side. It was so quiet and you could almost hear a pin drop, it was one of the most amazing settings that one could imagine at that time. Very simplistic, very surreal. everyone who attended Nirvana's Unplugged concert in New York really felt the buzz in the room, and most people in that room knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was something special and unique.

When the set list was given, other than "Come As You Are" there were no catchy Nirvana hits, and that's what made it very special and different. The band didn't attempt to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which was probably a wise move since they were beyond this song at that point.Pennyroyal Tea was not working at rehearsal, it was a hard arrangement during sound check. At the last moment Kurt decided to play this song by himself. It was definitely a defining moment in Nirvana's career to venture on unfamiliar territory while leaving their electric guitars at home.
