This reinforces the argument I made elsewhere for the concept of capital to be applied to older bodies. I was arguing then that older bodies could be understood as physical capital inasmuch as they contributed to the social and cultural positioning of the old. Will the reconstruction of the ageing body which is currently taking place and the new truth of aging to which it is contributing facilitate a redrawing of the prevalent systems of distinction which currently marginalise older people? Before addressing this issue, I turn to the ways in which scientific activity is focused on understanding the mechanisms that lead to the loss of function and how these can be harnessed to maximise physical capital in later life.
