In our local museum and art gallery there is a full-length portrait of a lady standing in a typically classical pose, although she is quite clearly not Greek or Roman,a prosperous English woman of the eightennth century.She looks extremely graceful and some might even describe her as a goddess,although I wouldn't myself.What is particularly intersting about this picture is that it tells us things about the period that atchaeologists,with all their digging and exploration,can't.This lady is beautifully dressed in clothes typical of the 1750s,but the discovery here has nothing to do with fashion,but with an aspect of civilization which we often do not discuss, namely drainage----becaus behind her, through the large window, can be seen piles of clay pipes waiting to be laid in trenches which are being dug in the lawn beyond.
