This project being for a town whose primary industry
was the processing of lumber, Aalto placed the town
hall within a thickly wooded plot just on the edge of the
street and civic center. He built the building to the height
of the tree line and made it be a place to be both in the
city and in the wilderness.

CONTEXTUAL DIAGRAMS
As Aalto was not only the designer of the town hall but
also the entire town, this building became a true civic
anchor for this place. This is understood through its
proximity to the public park area and a series of street
nodes which makes a enclosed city center. The building’s
orientation which projects out into the street with glass
facades and grand staircases invite the community in
while the “watch tower” looks over it.
