American physicist, inventor, statesman and socialist. He was born on January 17, 1706, at Boston, and died on April 17, 1790, at Philadelphia. Both parents are immigrants from England. They made candles and soaps. He was an apprentice in a printing factory at the age of 12, and never quitted the job since then. In 1727, Franklin organized an organization, which became the American Philosophy Association in 1743. In 1731 he created the first US public library in Philadelphia. He was the postmaster of that city from 1737 to 1753. He started researches on electricity in about 1744. In 1751 he founded the Philadelphia College (which became UPenn later). In 1753 he received the Copley medal. In the same year, he also received the honor degree from Harvard and Yale.

He was elected to be a member of the Royal Society in 1756, the president of the American Philosophy Association in 1769, and a foreign academician of the French Academy of science.
