这个实验是这样的， 把鸟关在笼子里放在正中心，外围一圈是完全一样的盒子，只有一个盒子有事物，这些盒子的位置是不变的固定的，其中有食物的盒子与罗盘指向一致（例如正北）。在这些盒子的外围，是墙（用来充当背景）。鸟笼、盒子、墙构成了同心圆，鸟笼和墙是可以旋转的，盒子位置固定。所以对这些鸟来说，盒子的相对位置一直在发生改变。但是，只要鸟能看到太阳，它们就能准确找到食物。反之，看不到太阳就会弄错食物位置。所以说，这个实验是用来排除除了太阳以外的其他导向方法的。比如说鸟是不是通过墙壁位置记忆之类。
