Hong Kong and Macao are parts of China in history， but they were separated from the motherland for some political reasons. China has been getting richer and stronger since its opening to the outside world. On July 1， 1997， Hong Kong finally returned home. On December 20， 1999， Macao returned home， too. Great changes have taken place in both Hong Kong and Macao. It shows the development and great strength of our country.
Taiwan is an intergral part of China. The Chinese people as well as most of the people from Taiwan are looking forward to the day on which Taiwan will return home. We are sure that day will e sooner or later.

Celebrating Hong Kong's Return

July 1st, 1997 is a great historic day when Hong Kong has returned to our motherland.
Hong Kong is a very big island city, which lies in the south of China. It consists of Hong Kong Island, Jiulong and Xinjie. It has a total area of 1092 square kilometres . It is known as one of “the four little dragons” in Asia, and is referred to as “the Eastern Pearl”. But in the 19th century the British government forced the Qing government to sign a series of unequal treaties①. From then on Hong Kong was ruled by the U. K.
We owe it to our chief designer② Deng Xiaoping that the agreement of Hong Kong's return has finally been reached beeen China and England. It was he who creatively conceived③ the idea of “one country with o systems”, which directly led to the possibility of Hong Kong's return.
Today, Hong Kong has returned to our motherland. In order to celebrate this oasion, we students have been holding lots of activities, such as the petitions of drawing, positions, photo-taking, lecturing④ and so on. All the Chinese people are doing a great deal to celebrate the return of Hong Kong.
Led by the Party, the Eastern Pearl will surely be even brighter.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) has recently received the ISO14001 certificate, meaning that the environmental management system (EMS) set up by the BOCOG conforms to the ISO14001:1966 standards and requirements.
The certificate issued by China's national environmental authentication center on October 13 covers areas including BOCOG's office work, the event route planning, venue planning, partners selecting, contracted hotels selecting, munication and environmental management.
The BOCOG started establishing the EMS following BOCOG president Liu Qi's approval in April 2004. After experts' examination and appraisal of a trial practice of several months, the BOCOG passed the certification in September this year.
The system will be implemented from now on to ensure BOCOG's scientific management of the Olympiad's preparation and hosting.
As a theme of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Green Olympics means to prepare it in aordance with the principle of sustainable development, which calls for the protection of environment, conservation of resources and maintenance of ecological balance.
The city's environmental infrastructure will be enhanced and its ecological surrounding improved. Beijing will widely anize environmental munication and education activities to raise public awareness and leave rich environmental legacy to China and world sports.
BOCOG has piled an EMS manual, assigned environmental management representatives, clarified responsibilities for BOCOG's different departments, held training courses, and confirmed some key environmental elements for all departments

The Beggar and the Miser乞丐和吝啬鬼
One day, an old beggar went to the
village. He knocked at the door of a rich man to beg for food. This was a big
house and at the side was built a granary with a big padlock. The owner of the
house was a miser and he was known for never helping anyone.
The
beggar was aware of his reputation but still pleaded, "Will you give me a bit of
butter or milk?"
The miser said impatiently, "No! Go away at
once!"
"Perhaps you can sweep out for me a bit of grain or
beans," the hungry beggar continued.
"There isn't anything in
my house!"
"How about a little bit of bread?" the beggar
insisted. "Only a mouthful of food and I will be very
grateful."
"Go away! I don't have bread!"
"How
about some water? I am thirsty."
"I don't have
water."
The beggar then said sadly to him, "My friend, why are
you here? You should go to some kind-hearted folk to beg for food because you
are poorer than anybody else."
The miser in this story is
really wealthy in a material sense, but he is extremely poor in a moral sense.
Rich people without passion and conscience are not wele in the society.
They are likely to maintain temporary wealth but not everlasting wealth. So at
the same time we feed our stomach, don't fet to feed our soul.
一天，一个老乞丐来到一个熟悉的村子里。他敲上了一个富人家的门，想跟他讨点儿东西吃。

The Spring Festival
Far and away the most important holiday in China is Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year. To the Chinese people it is as important as Christmas to people in the West. The dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late January to early February.
