爸爸也是个村里的文化人，在村小学教书已有多年。工资并不高，再加上家里十几亩地的收入，日子还算过得去。可看看左邻右舍都通过搞养殖业、运输业等都发家致富了，爸爸心里有点着急，可心里也想出了帮妈妈改掉坏习惯的策略了。
2008年春天，爸爸和妈妈商议要效仿人家搞养殖。养什么呢？经过斟酌大家一致认为养小鸡比较划算：周期短、见效快、风险低。就这样我们家从这一年开始了养鸡致富之路。
有了养鸡场，妈妈整天除了做些家务之外，把大部分时间都用到了小鸡的身上。一边养鸡，一边还要学习鸡病防治知识，为此，她专门买了一些关于养鸡方面的书籍。只要鸡场的事情忙完了，她就开始翻阅她的养鸡“秘籍”。妈妈终于从麻将桌边走出来了，每天翻阅这些“秘籍”倒成了妈妈的新的习惯了，鸡场在妈妈的精心管理下，收益颇丰，我们家的日子也逐渐红火起来了。
