可以改成When they heard the news ,they all jumped with joy.
Hearing是现在分词作状语，伴随状语，相当于由when引导的时间状语从句。
第一个句子中hear和jump是同一个主语they发出的动作，第二个句子leave和wave显然不是同一个人发出的动作,所以When leaving the airport，中的leaving不是伴随状语，而是现在进行时，When leaving the airport是省略了主语的省略句。
Hearing是现在分词作状语，伴随状语，相当于由when引导的时间状语从句。

为了表示明确的时间，可以在分成词的前面加when,while 等连词
While waiting for the train,I had a long talk with her
