if 一般是条件状语从句
例如：We will stay at home if it rains tomorrow.如果明天下雨，我们就呆在家里。
whether 一般为让步状语从句
例如：We will go to the library whether it rains or not.
无论明天是否下雨我们都去图书馆。

不是 是宾语从句 是只用于一般疑问句吗

在介词后，一般都用whether,不用if
如：I’m thinking of whether we should go fishing.
（2）在动词 不定式前用whether,不用if
(whether to do sth.) ：
例如：They asked me whether to go skating.
（3）当与or not连用，用whether,不要if
例如：I don’t know whether he’s free or not.
Mary asked whether I was doing my homework or not.
（4） 宾语从句提前时,用whether,不用if：
例如：Whether this is true or not, I can’t say.

其它情况的宾语从句，如ask,wonder，等引导时if和whether可互用
