We walked a couple of miles yesterday, pushing my little son in the stroller. He got hungry so we decided to stop for a meal for him.
While we were waiting in line, a woman came in. She was very angry and talking about someone who had asked her for money. In her opinion those people needed to get jobs.
We were feeling a little uncomfortable with her and I was wondering what I should say to my kids later, especially my fifteen year old daughter. I always tell her we should help others in trouble.
I knew this was my chance, both to help her change her thinking and to help her feel cared for on her birthday. I asked the clerk for help, telling her I wanted to pay for the lady and asking if she was getting just a meal.
The cashier was surprised! She went over and casually asked. "Will this be a meal?" Then looked at me and said, “You wanted cookies with that?” That was fun!
When the lady went to pay, the cashier said someone had paid for it for her. That's when the woman came to our table and tried to refuse to take the meal! She even said, “I can't take your money, because I didn't help the person who asked me for money for food!"
I just smiled. And l told her that I hoped she had a good time. In the end, she left really seeming to be brighter and more thoughtful about all that had happened.
