The theme for Oman’s national pavilion is Oman~ The Evolving Journey.
It encapsulates the story of Oman’s carefully planned progress and
development towards Better City, Better Life; a journey carefully balanced
between preserving the values of heritage and authenticity, while creating a
sustainable, modern, progressive future of better life for all.
The pavilion exterior combines elements of two famous historic forts. At the
rear is the distinctive round tower of Oman’s old capital, Nizwa. In front, is the
elegant tower of Sohar -- a port city once known as the “Gateway to China.”
Now modelled as the entrance to the Pavilion, Sohar once again welcomes
visitors from China to an experience of Oman.
These sturdy fort structures are complemented by a stylised glass enclosure
with angles reminiscent of the prow of a Ganjah, one of the largest and most
beautiful of traditional Omani sailing ships. The inclusion of Ganjah
embellishment hints at the maritime heritage of Oman’s ancient seafaring
traders, whilst the jewel-blue colouration of the glass itself evokes the startling
beauty of the Omani sea.
As a modern architectural element in the Pavilion, the ocean-hued glass is in
an unusual, harmonious contrast with the traditional sun-bleached mortar
finish of the forts. It provides a visual metaphor for Oman today-- representing
elements which remain true to this nation’s civilised culture, while
simultaneously indicating a will to keep moving forward. This continuity of
heritage, charting a journey into a brave new future, is the evolving journey of
Oman towards better cities, and better life.
