One day, I was heading home after work. I’d just started to work after my maternity leave, so I was looking forward to getting home to my baby. Coming down the stairs into the station, I happened to meet an elderly lady. She was trying to talk to someone. Because she was speaking another language and it was evening rush hour, no one stopped for her. I could see she was near to tears. So I walked up, “Can I help you?” She turned to me and started speaking. Besides English, all I really know is “Do you speak French?” and a few other words in French. She kept saying what I thought was “home” in English. I finally caught a word thanks to Hollywood movies. She was Russian. I named Moscow, and she nodded as if she was about to cry. Asking her to follow me, I went to the station office and asked if they had someone who could speak the language. But no one could. I wanted to help the woman find her home. We were at a station with 5 different train lines crossing here. We went through the station slowly, and suddenly she shouted happily and repeated a very mangled word of the station name. It was only a forty-minute ride. When we got to her house, she was very excited and asked me to come in for a drink. Showing her the photo of my child on my phone, I tried to explain that I had to get home to my baby. She quickly understood and then came out with a toy bear for my baby.
