sat语法！！！一题！！

Among the discoveries made possible by the invention of the telescope they found that dark spots existed on the sun in varying numbers.
答案说they found错了..请问错在哪里？

还有是forty years have passed 还是forty years has passed?
我怎么记得以前老师曾经说过距离时间什么的都是用has啊
比如说three miles is a long distance

这个问题在于they 在这里指意不明。they 是从哪里冒出来的？ who is 'they'?
语法上来说就是 pronoun with ambiguous reference.中文大概就是 介词指意模糊（抱歉，我没学过中文的英文语法…）。
There is no group of people identified in this sentence to whom the pronoun could refer. 我们可以按照逻辑infer 这里 they 是指科学家或者天文学家。但是因为在这个句子没有explicitly指出他们是谁，所以 the personal pronoun cannot be clear.
在英文语句中，一般情况下，我们每一句都要表明是谁在干什么。当年我写essay时被批了很多…

forty years当然是 HAVE passed.
我语法解释无力，你看这么理解可以不。
forty years，是一年两年三年…一年一年过来的，我们是一年年累积过来的，过来以后我们说，这些年，这些年都过去了。所以是have.

然而，3 miles，4 miles, 我们说，这一段距离很长。我们要用is. 因为我们可以把这段距离当做一个整体，一条线段。我们不能说3miles are long distances，因为我们不能说 3 miles里面包含的每一段都很长。是这一个整体很长。

我如此混乱的解释，能理解不？

they指代不明，单独的句子里面，有代词的话，该代词之前一定有一个特定的“解释”，比如它可能在句子里面先提到scientists,然后再说they，这样才不会有问题。SAT语法里有很多这样指代不明的题。

这句一定要改的话，可以改成Among the discoveries made possible by the invention of the telescope, dark spots existed on the sun in varying numbers are found.

forty years has passed里面，我查了些例句都是has。。不敢肯定。。

they found 没问题，问题出在前面没有逗号
应该是Among...of the telescope, they found...

另外forty years has passed为了强调量forty,是把它当作一个有一个的year来看待的，所以在这里看成复数没问题，只是为了突出量。其实更多时候forty years这样的表数量的词或短语是可以看成一个整体即单数的
