Dear Tom, it's very nice to hear from you. I'm sorry to hear that you feel sad about not having enough money to buy expensive gift for your friend. However please know that the friendship is not meansured by money. It's not necessary to buy expensive birthday gift to a friend, you don't have to be sad either if you can't afford it. Your classmate should understand that if he/she is your real friend. We are students now, we don't work. Our pocket money is from our parent. If you spend too much, you still need ask from them. What I think is that if you can make gift yourself, that'll be more meanful. For example, you can make the cards yourself or buy him/her a bunch of flower. Your classmate will be happy to get it.
