Because of Winn-Dixie, a big, ugly, happy dog, 10-year-old Opal learns 10 things about her long-gone mother from her preacher father. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends among the somewhat unusual residents of her new hometown. I am reading the book Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This book is basically about a girl, Opal who is 10-years-old and has just moved to a trailer park in the small town of Naomi, Florida, with her itinerant preacher father. While she was in a supermarket called Winn-Dixie, she encounters a scruffy dog wreaking havoc. Not wanting the dog to suffer, she quickly claims the dog is hers to save it from going to the pound and names it Winn-Dixie – after the supermarket. Winn-Dixie's first act of inspiration on Opal is for her to challenge her father to name ten things about her mother, who abandoned them years before. Soon, Winn-Dixie also becomes friends with everyone he encounters, and this encourages Opal to make new friends and gradually learn they all have burdened pasts. In the book, Opal meets all kind of people with different pasts. Miss Franny Block is the town librarian with a large family reputation to uphold; Gloria Dump is a blind black woman and recovering alcoholic feared of being a witch by neighborhood children; Otis is a shy ex-con pet store clerk with a musical streak. Opal gains wisdom and different outlooks of life through relationships with adults and peers, and grows emotionally in the process. Later, she and Gloria host a party for all her friends to meet each other, but a thunderstorm strikes and ruins it. The thunder also scares Winn-Dixie away because Winn-Dixie has a natural fear of thunder. Opal could not find him and gives up; she thinks that she could not find Winn Dixie just like she can’t find her mother anymore because when things go, you have to let them go. Soon, Winn Dixie finds its way back to Gloria’s house and the movie ends happily. Opal and her father also reform their strained relationship.
I think this story has a lot of connections with relationships. Which is pretty cool. I sometimes have problems with relationships too but I think Opal faces it really different. If I were her, I probably would’ve been pretty mean to Miss Franny, Gloria and Otis. Maybe I should learn how to be nicer to people who has needs. I think Opal was really nice in the first place since she claimed that Winn-Dixie is hers. If I saw a dog like that in the supermarket, I would’ve not claimed it was mine, especially when it was so ugly. However, I would tell the people not to do anything with him and just let him go instead of sending him somewhere else. Also, I would find it really difficult to live if I don’t have a mother and my father was a preacher. I’ve watched the movie before but I thought the book was better.
