Catalysts were prepared by impregnation of _-Al2O3, La RocheVersal TD250 (BET surface area 233m2/g after calcination at 1073K for 6 h) with a solution of rare earth nitrates (Ce(NO3)3•6H2O, Aldrich 99.99%, Pr(NO3)3•6H2O,and Tb(NO3)3•5H2O, Aldrich 99.9%) to obtain a support doped with 0–25 wt.% of rare earth oxides (REO) (weight percentage was calculated assuming REO is CeO2, Tb4O7 and Pr6O11). range of 1273–1473K for 6 h. Supports containing 15 wt.% of REO were impregnated with a solution of Pd(NO3)2 (Aldrich) to obtain a catalyst with a nominal Pd loading of 10 wt.%. Catalysts containing Pd were dried overnight at 393K and calcined at 1073K for 6 h. Temperature programmed combustion experiments (TPC) were carried out in a quartz tubular reactor (i.d.: 6 mm,l: 300 mm) with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 180 000 h−1 and a gas flow composition of 0.5 vol.% CH4, 2 vol.% O2 in He; total flowrate was 0.18 l/min. The gas apparatus consisted of three mass flow controllers which supplied reaction gases to the reactor; upstream of reactor a gas scrubber was positioned in order to ensure complete gas mixing. The powdered catalyst was loaded after being pressed and sieved (50 _m < Ø < 100 _m) and supported in the reactor on a quartz-wool bed. The sample was heated
