地势呈东西高，南北低，山地、河谷、丘陵、相互交错。城区海拔1875米。区境地形东西高中部低。中部为平坝，东西两侧多为山地。最高点在沿江乡境内的曹家大山，主峰海拔2452.2米，最低点在越州镇薛旗田南南盘江河缘处，海拔1845.1米。
主要河流有纵贯南北的南盘江，为珠江上游，境内流长56.7公里；东部的龙潭河和转长河，境内流长分别为28.4公里、31公里；西部的白石江和潇湘江，境内流长分别为31公里、46.7公里。
