刘宇毕业于中国人民大学新闻系。曾任新华社摄影部中央新闻采访室副主任、新闻采访室主任，现任国际照片编辑室主任。
早期主要从事中央外事新闻的采访。后任新华社常驻伦敦和华盛顿的摄影记者。先后参加过中央领导人活动，科索沃危机，澳门回归，伊拉克危机，印度洋海啸，北京奥运火炬珠峰接力以及五届奥运会等重大新闻的报道。
2013年在北京创立0707创意影像工作室，并在巴黎设立分支机构。工作室拥有专属的专业水下摄影棚、室内摄影棚以及别墅外景基地，业务范围涉及水下摄影、浪漫婚纱、创意广告、时尚写真、外景拍摄、境外跟拍、视频制作等。
