At the beginning, I should make it clear that Chinese education nowadays is quite different from what I have experienced.
Here is my personal experience.
Education style actually could be very different from schools. During my first four years in a small village elementary school, homework wasn't a burden at all. I could finish them up before six at school. But the head master had acquired every pupil to learn Chinese chess whether you liked it or not. Pupils were also required to grow vegetables in school farm in the organic way( naturally I had no faintest idea what Organic means) These were the main tasks besides homework for me and my classmates. Of course all the vegetables belonged to us and I usually brought those lovely fresh harvest home and asked papa to turn them into some delicious snacks and shared with classmates. One more thing, we had to learn a typing method called Wu Bi which was considered much more efficient in Chinese typing.
But later on I transferred to a 'Model School ' and I knew my happy childhood was over when I couldn't finish my homework before 10 at night. But I still found it was a nice experience. There was no so called right answers in Chinese reading exams. I still remember I once had a very long discussion with my Chinese teacher about a reading comprehension question. And I love the English class. My English teacher always let us read aloud the articles or played some roles.
Then it's junior high school (13-16). It's a very prestigious private school in my city. Only the best student ( I mean nothing boastful about myself) could get in.
Then nightmares began.
No more 'unnecessary class'
I had 7 different subjects a day and loads of homework. No more freedom to think because there were RIGHT ANSWERS in Chinese, History, Politics. The mathematics exam could be very difficult ( I am proud to say at that time my mathematical logic was better than most of the High school students in America)
My daily task was homework only.
The main goal: to get into the best high school.
High school was much worse than that. But I was in the best high school in my city ( welcome to google 'the Sun-Yat sen memorial middle school ). And I believed we already had a way more leisure schedule than other Chinese high schools. (Welcome to google Heng Shui First high school)
And the only goal: university.
Even my papa thinks the university is the ultimate goal of all these education.
But whoever has been a college student would understand that it's absolutely just another start.
This misunderstanding could lead to great harm.
First of all, freshman would be too relax to study. Just like after you finally pass the ending line in a long marathon, all you want to do is relax.
University is a detour, not the final destination. But Chinese education has kept telling young pupils that all the efforts you're doing are for a place in the university.
Like some religion keeps telling people all that you're suffering right now is for a welcome from angels.
But no one tells us what we should do in the heaven.
But as I have claimed that things are different now. Thanks to the Internet, we have website like Quora ( Zhihu in China) and BBS to share personal experiences. My younger fellows could get more information than I usually did before. Now some of them are fully aware of that university is not the ultimate goal. Because of the expansion, it's much easier to get into a Chinese university with cheap fee. There are too much unqualified graduates who once was a superb but lost his/her way in the past four years. I'm telling you this because I was also one of them. But I was lucky to have some good tutors in my sophomore year and I've realized all these years I have been degrading my own thinking about issues, questions, and the world I am living.
Above all, in my own perspective, Chinese education biggest problem is its goal. It has put too much emphasis on UNIVERSITY.
If students could realize that university isn't everything earlier , then they might have time to think about what they really want to be. They can understand what they are really up to and going to be even after graduating from university.
That's the biggest challenge that Chinese education is facing with.
