The sample for the research was selected from Croatian Agency for Supervision of Financial Services database (www.hanfa.hr) and periodical reports of the Zagreb Stock Exchange (www.zse.hr) and Varazdin Stock Exchange (www.vse.hr). Annual financial reports of 200 Croatian listed companies in succession from 2000 to 2006 were reviewed and companies were selected in sample according to the following criteria:
1. Companies that have less than 100 shareholders and the initial capital less than 30,000,000.00 HRK (approx. 4,000,000.00 EUR) were excluded from the sample - in compliance with the definition of public joint stock companies in article 1 14 of Law on Securities Market (Official Gazette of the Republic of Croatia No. 84/2002)
2. A company had to be listed on the ZSE for at least five years and its annual financial reports had to be available in the data basis for the period of 2000 to 2006.
3. A company mustn't be a financial institution or in insurance company sector
First criterion provides a relatively homogenous sample according to company size. Second criterion is in compliance with similar relevant researches (e.g. Beaver, 1966; Altman and Hotchkiss, 2006), where a 5-year observation period is used. Third criterion is also consistent with similar relevant researches (e.g. Ohlson, 1980; Mossman et al, 1998) where financial institutions and insurance companies were excluded from the sample because of assets' structure differences.
