1. How to break a bad habit

The most lasting way to break a bad habit is to make it so that you have no desire to start it up again. “But my bad habit is eating too much chocolate ice cream. How,” you may wonder, “am I going to start hating chocolate ice cream?” It’s simple. Just make chocolate ice cream disgusting. Tell yourself you can have it, so long as you cover it in Dijon mustard. You can break a bad habit and keep it broken by making a relapse totally unattractive. Just attach your most hated activities to your bad habit. For example, say you want a cigarette. Well, you can have it, after you scrub the inside of your garbage can with a toothbrush. In a few minutes, you won’t want that cigarette so much after all!Just skip your habit once, to prove you can. Now, what about once a week, once a day, or forever?Unlock your competitive drive by racing your own past successes.Make your bad habit so unattractive that you don't want to do it!The ideas in this article are based on the work of Behavioral Psychology pioneer B.F. Skinner! For another perspective, see this CNet article, "MIT Explains Why Bad Habits Are Hard To Break", online at http://news.com.com/MIT+explains+why+bad+habits+are+hard+to+break/2100 -11395_3-5902850.html

2. An important event in my life (better write it yourself, man)
(Sample text:)

Shyness . . . Reticence . . . Both are obstacles I have surmounted to attain my goals. I am a naturally reticent person, and to be a leader I was forced to dispel my fears.
Last year, at 4-H Camp, I was Top Staff, one of four teenagers in charge of 150 campers, many of them away from home for the first time. I couldn't go to someone in authority to solve a problem; I was authority. A rainstorm pelted camp for the first time in fifteen years, forcing modification of the camp program. Unsheltered sleeping areas were evacuated, camp activities rescheduled, and camp was brought to an early end because of the torrential downpour.

Later in the summer, NapaNet, an Internet Service Provider, hired me. As part of my job, I taught customers how to use this new and sometimes baffling technology. Presenting technology to new users helped me overcome my fears of being in front of groups. Now I regularly answer telephones and help customers at the NapaNet store.

I also help my peers learn when I tutor in math. Whenever someone approaches me with a question, I am honored to assist them. Teaching others helped me become more confident in myself. I am no longer paralyzed by nervousness when I give presentations in front of my classes.

This self confidence was enhanced by being leader of a clarinet swing ensemble, regularly performing in front of large audiences. Previously, the jazz band at my school did not have a clarinet section. Due to my suggestions, the band director created the new group to play alongside the jazz band.

These opportunities helped me realize that I can achieve what I want, while helping others. While quelling my shyness, I developed skills that allow me to help other people, and also to help myself.
