1.都是“无论什么”的意思。但no matter what只能放句首，句中只能用whatever 。
"no matter+疑问词" 或"疑问词+后缀ever"
例：No matter what happened, he would not mind.=Whatever happened, he would not mind.
用法有些许差别：
no matter what能引导让步状语从句，但不能引导名词性从句（包括主语从句和宾语从句）
而whatever则皆可。
2.rather than 是连词,表否定后边的,"而不是....."
instead of 是副词, 意思跟rather than差不多, 都表示否定后面的部分,只是在句子中的位置有些区别
