My Ambition
When I was a kid, I used to own a lot of best-selling fashion figurines and it came to develop on my mind that a little one like me could one day become as pretty and skinny as Barbie. I enjoyed weekly manicures with my mother starting at the age of four, spent my days playing princess dress-up, was not regularly around professional women, and was not told I could achieve anything I put my mind to.
I lived in a time when multibillion dollar Disney marketing messages and parents themselves were encouraging their young girls towards princess adoration. Dress up was involving high heels, makeup, and aspirations of unattainable physical beauty as early as pre-school. Princess costumes had taken over pre-school dress up areas and even teachers were calling us “princesses.” My parents paraded me out in princess clothing without stopping to think of the ramifications.
My ambition of becoming a Barbie girl was so strong that I told everyone around me how eager I wanted to make my hair longer and blonder, how desperate I had to make myself taller and skinnier, and how much I cherished my delicate long legs. I even secretly went to consult a surgeon for details in gender reassignment surgery.
My parents told me all I had to do was to eat lots of vegetables, take afternoon naps, study hard and be a good girl in order to grow exactly like a Barbie doll, until recently when I started to realise they were just fooling me all the time. My dream was shaken when I was told by my psychiatrist that no matter how much lingerie and high heels I had bought, my facial hair would not stop growing and my genital would not shrink to disappearance. Even after I had re-evaluated this unachievable goal myself today, I could not emphasise enough how much I hate my hairy chest and my hanging sack. My ambition persists nevertheless.
