This is literally what I do every single day...

I would start with complimenting his/her clothes. If there is a story behind it, find something else in common to talk about; if it doen't work, I will start asking questions about the theme of the party to find something common to talk about.

Talking about good things instead of bad ones. According to social psychology, a nice and friendly atmosphere triggers positive attitudes. Under such circumstances, most people will enjoy the topics they talk about.

Humor plays an extremely important role in conversations. If you tell the jokes right, everyone will have a good conversation with solid quality and you can definitely leave a positive impression on others. If you play dull, peole will lose interest talking to you.
