except 和except for的区别

except for：除了…以外；要不是由于
except指的是整体除去部分，但是前面内容属于同一类。except for指的是一个个体的构成部分除去，前面内容不属于同一类。通常我们说是“美中不足”。
词性区别。
except可以做动词、介词、连词；而except for一般都做介词词组用。
用法不同。
except可以做谓语、状语、定语等等； 而except for一般做状语。
例如：
They were all there except me. （他们和我都是人，同类）
除了我以外他们都在那里。
We work every day except Sunday. （每天和星期天是同类）
除了星期日， 我们每天都上班。

（3）except for也表示“除…以外”,指对某种基本情况进行具体的细节方面的修正.它同except的区别是：except for后接的词同句子中的整体词（主语）不是同类的,指从整体中除去一个细节,一个方面；而except后接的词同整体词（主语）一般是同类,指在同类的整体中除去一个部分.例如:
⑨ I can answer all the questions except for the last one.除了最后一题外,所有题目我都可以解答.
⑩ Your writing is good except for a few grammar mistakes.除了几处语法错误外,你的作文写得很好.
两者的用法不尽相同：当位于句末时，两者可以互换；当位于句首时，只能用except for。但是except for与except的含义一样，都表示“除了...之外，没有”。
I can do nothing except / except forswimming in the dog days. （在三伏天里，除了游泳，我什么事也做不成。）

此处比较难理解，except可以说是从一个整体中除去一个与其它部分不相同的部分，如例句中 this one 是 all the building 中的一部分，它是包含在主语中的。except for 是表示从一个整体中除去一些瑕疵，且除去的部分与主语不是同一类的，例句中，all the building和their location 明显不是同一类的事物。

此句相当于
Except for apoliceman on his duty,there was no single person in the dark street that night.
1. except后面可接名词、代词、动词、副词、介词短语和从句等。
We have an English lesson every day except Sunday. 除星期天外，我们每天有一堂英语课。(接名词)
They all went to the park last Sunday except him. 除了他以外，上星期天他们都去公园了。(接代词)
二、 except for用于表示对主要部分的肯定和对局部的否定。它不表示同类事物之间的关系，其意思为：
1. "除了……以外"。
Smith is a good man, except for his bad temper. 史密斯除了脾气不好外，是个好人。
1. except与except for有时可以通用，不过，一般情况下，except for可置于句首，而except则不能。如：
Everyone is here except Tom. (或：Except for Tom everyone is here.)除汤姆外，大家都到了。
