The financial crisis of 2007–2008, also known as the global financial crisis and the 2008 financial crisis, is considered by many economists to have been the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
The financial crisis originated from Wall Street's subprime mortgage crisis, and gradually evolved into a large-scale credit crisis. Subprime mortgages differ from traditional standard mortgages in that subprime mortgages are less demanding on the creditworthiness and repayment ability of borrowers, and lending rates are correspondingly higher than those of ordinary mortgages. Those who have been rejected by banks for providing high-quality mortgages due to poor credit records or weak repayment capacity will apply for subprime mortgages to purchase housing.
However, with the US housing market, especially short-term interest rates to improve the temperature, sub-prime loan repayment rates have risen sharply, home buyers greatly increased the burden of repayment. At the same time, the continued cooling of the housing market has also made it difficult for homebuyers to sell their homes or refinance them through mortgages. This situation led directly to a large number of loans to the borrower can not repay the loan on schedule, the bank to recover the house, but not sell high prices, large losses, triggered a subprime mortgage crisis.
The subprime mortgage crisis was a nationwide banking emergency that contributed to the U.S. recession of December 20
December 2007 – June 2009.It was triggered by a large decline in home prices after the collapse of a housing bubble, leading to mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures and the devaluation of housing-related securities. Declines in residential investment preceded the recession and were followed by reductions in household spending and then business investment. Spending reductions were more significant in areas with a combination of high household debt and larger housing price declines.
