格林先生夫妇很担心他们的儿子里奥。他似乎是个哑巴，虽然他其他方面都很正常。格林先生夫妇想尽一切办法让他开口说话，但都没成功。
当里奥六岁，找了城里最好的医生为他仔细检查，但也找不出问题。他似乎很聪明，只是从来不说话。
「有可能是他的头脑有问题，所以不懂得有说话的能力。」一位医生说。
「但他会读和写」，格林先生说，「我们给他写字条，告诉他他是能说话的。」

Mr. and Mrs. Green were very worried about their son, Leo. He seemed to be dumb though he was normal in every other way. Mr. and Mrs. Green tried everything to get him to speak , but with no success.
When Leo was six years old, the best doctors in the town examined him carefully, but could find nothing wrong. And he seemed to be smart. It was just that he never spoke.
“There might be something wrong with his mind, and he doesn’t know he’s able to speak,” One doctor said.
"But he can read and write.” said Mr. Green. “We've written him notes, telling him that he can speak.”
“ It's certainly very strange,” another doctor said. “Perhaps he’ll be able to speak some day.”
Years passed. Leo went to university. But he did not speak a single word.
Then one day Leo was having a meal with his parents. Without any warning, he looked up from his meal and said. 'Pass me the salt. please.”
Mr. and Mrs. Green were excited. “You spoke! You spoke!' they cried. "Why have you waited so long to speak?”
“I didn’t have anything to say,” he said. “Until now everything was perfect. But you forget to put salt in these potatoes.”
