Project to improve water quality:Aberdeen, landowners working to keep animal waste out of Elm Lake
Aberdeen officials are working with area landowners to help improve water quality in Elm Lake and its watershed.
The Elm Lake watershed, which consists of about 110,000 acres in Brown, McPherson and Dickey, N.D., counties,
has numerous tributary streams draining into it, said Tim Wilson,Elm Lake Watershed Restoration Project coordinator.
The city is involved with the project because it affects much of the city, said Robin Bobzien,Aberdeen city engineer ang public works director.
"Elm Lake is a major source of our drinking water,"he said."Raw water quality is something we need to be concerned about."
He said by improving the quality of the water in Elm Lake, the city's water treatment plant will have an easier time treating the water.
Officials gathered data for about two years by analyzing water quality, lake sampling and assessing the land use.
What they found was somewhat of a concern.
"Our shore lines are moving in, and we're losing depth,"Bobzien said.
Animal waste:One way to improve the water quality is to contain the animal waste that is running off producers' land and into the streams.
"It's not just to protect Elm Lake," Wilson said. "But other landowners downstream."
Bobzien said some property owners use a dugout to gather water for cattle, but if the quality of the water,"
Bobzien said.
"It's getting to the point that people don't want to use dugouts anymore because of the quality of the water," Bobzien said.
Projects tasks include: sediment traps, hundreds of acres of seeding to restore naural vegetation, dirt work to repair stream banks, animal waste management systens, animal feeding operations and the construction of alternative water sources to help get grazing cattle away from trbutaries that feed the lake, Wilson said.
One system: For example,Wilson and Ryan Smith, project technician, are working with a property owner about five miles south of Forbes, N.D. 展开
