1. We drink tea every day. But more than three hundred years ago, most of the people in Europedidn,t Know anything about ten. Some people heard about it, but very few of them knew what to do with it.
There is a story about an English sailor who went to countries in the east, the west and the south. He had been to lndia and China One day he came home and brought some tea as apresent for his mother. She told her friends to come to the ''tea party''. The old woman brought out some tealeaves and asked them to ead, of course nobody Liked the tealeaves.
At that time the sailor came in. He looked at the table and said, ''Mother, what hare you done with the tea?'' ''I boiled it as you said. '' And what did you do with the water?''
''I threw it away, of couse,'' answered the old woman.
''Now you may throw away the leaves,too.''said her son .

A traveller(旅行者) came out of the airport(飞机场) There were a lot of taxis. He asked every taxi-driver his name. Then he took the third one. It cost 5 dollars(美元) from the airport to the hotel. “How much does it cost for the whole day?” the man asked. “100 dollars, ” said the taxi-driver. This was very dear, but the man said it was OK.
The taxi-driver took the man everywhere. He showed him all the parks and museums in the city. In the evening they went back to the hotel(旅馆). The traveller gave the taxi-driver 100 dollars and said, “What about tomorrow? ”The taxi-driver looked at the man and said, “Tomorrow? It's another 100 dollars. ” But the man said, “That's OK! See you tomorrow. ” The taxi-driver was very pleased.
The next day the taxi-driver took the traveller everywhere again. They visited(参观)all the parks and museums again. And in the evening they went back to the hotel. The man gave the taxi-driver 100 dollars again and said, “I'm going home tomorrow. ”The taxi-driver was sorry because he liked the traveller and, above all, 100 dollars a day was a lot of money. “So you're going home. Where do you come from?” he asked. “I come from New York.” “New York! ” said the taxi-driver, “I have a sister in New York. Her name is Susannah. Do you know her?” “Of course I know her. A beautiful and very successful actress (女演员) was the star for a new musical show. Her home was in the countryside, but she did not want to go back there every night, so she bought an expensive house in the centre of the city, got some beautiful furniture and got a man to paint the rooms in new colours.
It was very difficult to get tickets for her show, because everybody wanted to see it. So she decided to give the painter two of the best seats. She hoped that this would make him work better for her. He took the tickets without saying anything, and she heard no more about them until the end of the month, when she got the painter's bill (帐单). At the bottom of it were these words: " Four hours watching Miss Hall sing and dance : 3 pounds," with this note: " After 5 p.m. I get 15 shillings (先令) an hour instead of 10 shillings." 展开
